After spending 13 years in hanging around my kids' sports fields, serving on the boards of our local leagues, and having a husband who coached for those same 13 years, I found this book to be completely in sync with my viewpoint of youth sports - they're best when they're about the KIDS. Brainard gives gentle advice on how to take the focus off adult egos and put it on the kids' well-being, where it belongs.This book is short, to the point and can be easily reread each year.

Great advice for this mom of boys. I highly recommend it for all moms with boys in baseball. I appreciate the help in understanding my role, and things I can do to help facilitate a better player and teammate.
Solid advice on and off the diamond and is an easy read. Coaching practices within can be implemented in other sports as well. Highly recommendable! Also, as other commenters noted, it will definitely provoke childhood memories for anyone that used to play sports. Enjoy.
Oh how I remember the ride home after the game, a wasn't good. Dad would go over everything I did wrong.The book took me back to my childhood several times. I knew my dad loved me, but he was such a nut about sports. He was a great athlete, and expected me to be the same, I wasn't. I tried hard, and that's all that mattered to me. The fun was taken out of it for me. This book covers a lot of different topics on baseball, and life. All you dads need to take a look at this book.Moms will like it to. Lee
Excellent advice in this book! I read this, and tried some tips from the book with my grandson (starts little league) and not only has he improved but it has helped me also. Author puts it in perspective," its a game". Children should have fun and parents/grandparents should also. We win a few games, which is great, but we also
lose a few games, it happens. This book will not only make your child a better ballplayer, but will also make him/her a better sportsperson.I recommend this book to everyone that goes to the ballpark with their child either for practice (which is most important) or for the Saturday morning game day.
THANKS TO MR BRAINARD FOR ADDRESSING SO MANY IMPORTANT ISSUES W/YOUNG CHILDREN AND SPORTS. MY GRANDSON SON PLAYS SOCCER AND BASKETBALL, HE IS ONE OF THE FORTUNATE ONES THAT ARE GIFTED AT GAMES. SO MANY OTHERS ARE NOT OR HAVE NO ONE TO SPEND THE TIME TEACHING THEM. COACHES CAN BE SUCH A ROLE MODEL. I'VE SEEN SEVERAL REALLY GOOD COACHES THAT DO IT SO NATURALLY. I'VE RECOMMENDED AND SHARED MY COPY WITH SEVERAL AT THE PARK. EVERYONE IS SO RUSHED THAT CONSIDERATION IS NOT ALWAYS GIVEN TO THE EFFORT COACHES PUT INTO EACH GAME. AS AN AVID FAN I WILL USE THIS VENUE TO THANK ALL COACHES FOR THEIR TIME, CARE, AND LESSONS THAT EACH CHILD BRINGS HOME FROM THE GAME. HOPEFULLY PARENTS WILL READ THIS TO SEE THE GAME FROM THE OTHER SIDE.
